What skin care product
should you use?
The question
always comes up in the wellness studio about what skin care product
is best and what really works. The truth is, many of them are great
lines and most of the products “work”, the catch however is that
they don’t work for everyone’s skin type or skin condition.
I’ve spoken to
clients who rant and rave about a particular skin care line and then
another client will walk in and say how much they hate that same
skin product?? Does that mean the line is good or bad, absolutely
not. It just means whatever product ingredients happen to be in
that skin care, works for client A but not client B. Body
chemistry, oil secretions, hydration, pH etc. are all factors as to
how our skin will react to a particular face or body care product.
pH simplified:
pH or potential hydrogen is the unit of measurement that indicates
whether a substance is acidic, neutral or Alkaline. Pure distilled
water has a pH of 7, which is neutral. Due to a mix of sebum (oil)
and sweat normally present in our bodies, the skin has a natural pH
of around 4.5 to 5.5, which is slightly acidic. The mixture of
sebum and moisture form a protective barrier called the “acid
mantle”. The acid mantle aids in protecting the skin from harmful
substances that can disrupt or irritate the skin.
The idea in skin
care is to protect our acid mantle in order to keep our skin
balanced, hydrated and healthy looking. Therefore, it’s important
to stop using harsh soaps and cleanser products as they relatively
have a high pH causing our skin to become more alkaline, which is
very drying and can break down the acid mantle.
A common
misconception people have is that if they use harsher skin care
products, it will strip there face of the excess oils leaving it
balanced. Unfortunately, that’s furthest from the truth as the body
reacts in a totally opposite way. When you “attack” the skin
stripping it of natural oils, the brain considers the skin under
attack and therefore will produce even more oils to protect its acid
mantle. As a result, the more you over-strip your skin of its
sebum, the more oil will be produced making for an endless battle.
Skin care
cosmetics or products are created in a variety of forms depending on
their intended use and benefits. There are endless amounts of
natural and scientific ingredients, vitamins and minerals that can
be blended together making for a fantastic and effective product.
It’s the product ingredients that will determine what’s it’s
benefits are and for what skin type or condition. You can choose
from "all natural" skin care or organic products to the extreme
opposite where the best science has to offer can be found, both
types being beneficial in different ways.
In a nutshell,
the secret is to finding what skin care ingredients work best for
your skin and its conditions is to try different products until you
find one that’s right for you. However, you should use a skin care
line for at least a couple of months to notice any significant
results as nothing happens overnight.
Regular monthly facials and a consistent home care regime will
dramatically change how your skin looks and feels. Also remember
that diet, stress and a number of other systemic issues can all
effect how the skin will look and feel. So communicate with
your skin care specialist to find the best skin care solution and
products meant just for you.
I have
personally found that alternating between various products during
season changes, show great results as our skin also changes with the
weather; the trick however is to stay within the same skin care
line. Skeyndor has a wonderful range of products for various skin
types and conditions making an ideal skin care choice as all the
lines intermingle with one another.
Other skin care
products that are popular in today’s market include Arbonne, Obagi,
Shiseido, Proactive, Elemis, Dermalogica, Avene, Murad, Garnier,
Cellex C, Eminence and Yonka to name a few. Click the skin care
