HOME REMEDY FOR NAIL FUNGUS

Q: Is there
a home remedy for nail fungus available that is less
invasive to the body then taking prescription drugs?
A:
I think nail fungus has to be one of the most popular
topics that comes up in conversation at the day spa.
Unfortunately, it's not a pretty topic but it is a very important
one as it's a very common problem for both men and women. It
can effect people of all ages but is usually more common in people
aged 40+.
Nail fungus or mold is an infection
of the nail usually caused when moisture is trapped between
the free edge of the nail, either under an artificial nail or injury
underneath the nail plate itself. Fungus starts as a greenish
yellow color; as it spreads deeper into the nail it will eventually
turn black and the nail may thicken or begin to deteriorate and
eventually fall off. Fungus is often associated with a
foul smelling odor commonly on the toenails as the feet are
continually exposed to sweaty shoes or shower floors. Women
are more prone to fungus on the fingernails due to common
activities involving water. An nail fungus may be difficult to
treat as infection may recur but there are home remedies out there that
have worked in the past.
A nail fungus home remedy that I've
found to have positive results has to be with the use of pure
essential oils. Tea tree essential oil is anti-fungal,
anti-inflammatory and anti-septic. It's strong enough to fight
against the nail infection but gentle enough to put directly on the
skin. I suggest taking some time at home in the morning and
night to begin the nail fungus remedy. First clean out any
debris around the nail fungus and then place a few drops of tea tree
directly over the infected area. If the nail fungus is on the
toes, I'd also suggest using a foot power to minimize moisture to
the toes. Try to keep the nail fungus dry at all times and
allow the nail to breath when possible. Do NOT try to mask the
fungal infection by using nail polish or band-aids as fungus loves
to grow in warm, dark and damp climates.
Another home remedy for nail fungi
I've heard in the past is the use of hydrogen peroxide.
Although I've never tried it, I would follow the same steps as you
would for using tea tree but instead apply a saturated cotton ball
with peroxide to the infected area(s). You may even want to
alternate the two remedies to see if it helps speed up the process?
Other home nail fungus remedies I've
heard or read about include apple cider vinegar, neem seed oil,
rubbing alcohol, cayenne pepper with water, lemongrass, lavender,
clary sage and rosemary essential oils, Epsom salts and mouth wash
to name a few.
Nail fungus can be a tough problem so
remember to be patient! Clearing up a nail fungus takes time and
dedication to eliminating the issue and can take up to 6 months or
more to see significant results. Don't give up and keep trying
natural remedies with a less invasive approach to the body.
Of course, you should always consult a
qualified physician to see how serious the nail fungus is before
trying any remedy on your own.
