a healthy body, mind and spirit
Keeping a healthy body,
mind and spirit seems to be getting harder and harder in today's
society with such busy lifestyles using cell phones, computers,
microwaves, working overtime, desk jobs, fast food, paying bills and
on and on. We tend to forget to take care of ourselves and are
so caught up with everything else that our "well-being" may be
compromised.
A well-balanced
condition of the body, mind and spirit can lead you to a more
positive outlook on life making it essential for everyone to treat
themselves better. Changing personal habits and the decision
to a healthier lifestyle are the first steps to having a vigorous
body, mind and spirit.
When establishing a healthy routine to maintain "well-being" there
are a number of health-related areas that will help you stay on
track.
Let's begin with the
importance of rest and relaxation. Well-documented research
shows that a restful night's sleep can actually help prevent illness
and disease. Good sleep helps the body to regenerate and
repair while reducing tension and increase vitality. Six
to eight hours of sleep is what most people need to avoid suffering
from fatigue and anxiety as less that that has shown to weaken the
immune system, lowers energy levels and disrupts normal body
functions in some people. Sleep deprivation reduces the body's
production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in perception
and controlling emotions which is why some people tend to be moody.
Being able to relax, refocus and unwind before bed is essential to
help maintain body, mind and spirit health, so get your sleep!
Next is a topic that
everyone wants to do but rarely takes the time do it, yes that's
right Exercise! A regular exercise program will not only help
you look better, it will also make you feel and function better.
Exercise helps stimulate blood circulation, lymph flow and
metabolism, allowing your body and mind to function at optimal
performance. Your muscles will be more toned, your skin gains
more nutrients, your body more oxygen with less toxins and your
heart will stay strong. The three things that make for a well
balanced exercise routine include strength training, cardio and
stretching so try to do all three when at the gym or outside.
Tip: In order to be safe, it's important to
consult with a physician before starting any new exercise routine or
extreme lifestyle changes.
Nutrition is another
tricky subject as there are so many theories out there.
Keeping things simple it's important to follow the basics: drink
lots of fresh water; eat smaller portions throughout the day rather
than only 3 large meals and remember to have something from all
major food groups, mainly a protein, carbohydrate and fruits or
vegetables. Fresh raw foods contains energy producing
substances that help regulate body temperature, rebuild tissues and
aids in concentration and mobility. Also, limit your intake of
"junk food" such as pop and sweets as studies have shown that these
types of food slower immunity and deplete the body of essential
vitamins and minerals.
Stress could possibly be
the most popular topic discussed throughout the "wellness world"
these days as it's one of the leading causes of dis-ease.
Learning stress management techniques can really help oneself in
today's fast-paced society in order for you to have the ability to
ward off or handle the stressors you come across. Emotional
stresses such as anger and depression can harmfully weaken your
immune system, especially of your heart and glands. Your
ability to manage stress will do wonders for your mental and
physical health so being aware of what causes your stress and using
coping strategies will help to reduce the chances of dis-ease.
Make it a priority to book in a
relaxation treatment
every now and again, to allow your mind, body and spirit to center
and rebalance itself giving you a fresh start.
Last but not least,
"spirit" is a broad topic that means different things to different
people. My views on spirituality is simple: I believe we all
come from a divine energy and that we are all made up of, and share
that energy. I have no idea what the meaning of life is, but
know that we are hear to live, learn and enjoy ourselves to the best
of our ability. That being said, this "spirit" or "energy"
that we share I believe can become imbalanced during the trials and
tribulations of life and sometimes it's hard to get back on track.
This is where
holistic therapy can come into play; treatments like
reiki, crystal healing, deeksha, aromatherapy, healing touch, chakra
balancing, color and sound therapy are all forms of energy healing.
An imbalance in
ones energy field can cause psychological and emotional functions to
become compromised leading to an unhealthy mind, body and spirit.
Take some time out to meditate, read a book, nap, take a bath,
listen to soothing music, burn essential oils or go in for an energy
treatment as these can all help in the centering of your spirit.
In summary, there are
many things you can do to achieve a healthy body, mind and spirit,
whether it be rest and relaxation, good nutrition, stress management
or a spiritual awakening; all or one of these areas will improve and
guide you to a healthier way of being.
